It’s getting to that time of year when the bees start backing off from taking liquid feed. If you haven’t already, watch for a warm, dry day and pull any feeders off the hives — they’ll start to mildew if left on too long.
If you’re one of the folks who insulates, hold off a bit longer — you actually want the hives to cool down a little more first. Letting them feel that seasonal drop in temperature helps slow their metabolism so they don’t burn through winter stores too quickly. Close bottom boards if you have them. Additionally Check hive weight. If they still feel light, you can add fondant or a candy board later.
While you’re at it, take a few minutes to, plan for moisture control. Bees handle cold far better than moisture, so
- Use a candy board to absorb moisture on top
- Tip the hives slightly forward so condensation drains out instead of pooling inside.
- Add a moisture board if you have one.
- Consider a quilt box for extra absorption.
- If nothing else make sure you place an insulating cover to reduce condensation under the lid.
