Don’t forget—your bees aren’t as active when temperatures are cooler. Sure, they still forage, but not like they do on those nice, sunny, calm days. And with rain showers sprinkled in, forage can really slow down.
So be sure to check their food stores! If you’ve got a top feeder and don’t have to crack the hive open—just git ’er done. If you do need to open the lid, make sure it’s dry, not too breezy and at least 55°F outside. You don’t want to chill the brood.
Even though it’s spring, bad weather can leave colonies short on both nectar and protein. A little syrup and a pollen patty (or substitute) can go a long way right now to support brood rearing and keep your hive growing strong.
